What five years of manufacturing-finance placements taught us

When all you do is place manufacturing finance professionals, it gives you a unique perspective. We used that perspective and studied the last five years of our placements — and a handful of patterns kept showing up. Here's what we found.

THE BIG ONE

The same job title can pay $75k apart.

Take Plant Controller. Across our placements we saw salaries range from about $115k to $190k— for the identical title. What moved the number wasn't always seniority or letters after a name; it was the size of the plant and complexity. The lesson for everyone: a title doesn't always define what you make — scope and complexity do.

THE PATH

There's a clear ladder — and each rung is a real step.

Exact numbers vary by location and plant, but the order almost never does. This is the progression we watch people climb, shown as the pay ranges we've actually seen.

ABOUT CHANGING JOBS

A move isn't always a promotion — and that's fine.

When people changed jobs through us, only about a third moved into a higher title. Nearly half stayed at the same level — and roughly one in five actually took a lower title, almost always for a bigger plant, a stronger company, or a place they wanted to live. A great move can be flat on paper and up in every way that matters.

MYTH-BUSTERS

Four things people believe that our placements didn't.

FOR HIRING TEAMS

Two things that surprise hiring teams.

Relocation is the norm — at every level.

More than half the people we placed relocated, and that held true from cost accountant all the way to controller. A national search isn't just for junior roles — it's how these seats actually get filled, and it roughly doubles your pool.

Budgets age faster than they used to.

Across our placements, pay for these seats climbed about 13% in five years. A range set even two budget cycles ago is quietly advertising a below-market number — and the best people don't call to negotiate it. They just pass.

About these notes

These patterns come from the manufacturing-finance placements Cost Accounting Recruiters completed over the last five years, nationwide. They're real searches, not a survey — but they reflect our desk, not the whole market. We share ranges and patterns rather than precise figures, because the honest truth is that location and scope move pay more than any single number can capture. No individual salaries, names, or client details are shared.
