Plant Controller

Lead finance at Owens Corning's 'lighthouse' plant in Amarillo — a 220-person glass reinforcement facility with 4–5 direct reports and a team that has been here for years — as the plant transitions to the Praana Group during a major division spin-off.

The Overview

Owens Corning is seeking a Plant Controller for their Amarillo, TX plant — one of the largest sites in the division with several capital investments creating automation. The plant has 220 employees. This position reports to the plant leader with strong reporting accountability to the segment manufacturing financial leader. The plant is part of the glass reinforcement division that has been sold and is in the process of spinning off to the Praana Group over the next 6–9 months. This division produced $1B in revenue last year.

The Role

The Plant Controller provides financial leadership to the manufacturing facility and is expected to be a dynamic leader on the plant leadership team. Responsibilities include building and creating processes in all major areas of accountability, ensuring the environment complies with the Company's internal control policies and Sarbanes-Oxley, leading financial planning, budgeting and forecasting processes, managing non-financial plant administrative processes (warehouse, materials/production planning), and providing in-depth analysis on variances to plan and forecast.

In Our Words

Owens is looking for more than an accountant. They want a business partner to help the operations team make decisions. This plant in particular is one of the leading plants in terms of their TPM (Total Production Maintenance) certifications — a form of LEAN manufacturing. You won't be walking into a fire, but you will have the good challenge of driving process improvement.

The Hiring Manager

Leadership called the Amarillo plant a 'lighthouse' plant for the division — it often sets the standard for how things go. The Plant Manager is a 10+ year veteran of Owens who has been in this role for 3 years. The last person in this role was with Owens for 8 years before leaving when the division was sold.

Your Team

You will manage a team of 4–5 salaried direct reports and a larger team of 18–20 indirect reports. The plant has experienced a lot of stability — most of the 200+ employees grew up in the local area.

The Culture

The local team is sad to be leaving Owens but is excited about the transition to Praana. With all the capital investment into this plant, it is not going anywhere. The team feels joining Praana will make them more nimble and will remove some layers, giving them more exposure to leadership. The president of this division is staying on to join Praana.

Systems & ERP

Owens Corning runs SAP.
